Transplant Process

When you are asked to approve a hematopoietic cell transplant, this includes medical procedures and exams for the patient and the donor before transplant, and for the patient during and after transplant.

Pre-transplant  

• Deciding to transplant includes patient assessment, tissue typing of the patient and patient's family, caregiver selection and patient referral to a transplant center.
• Searching for closely matched unrelated hematopoietic cells includes preliminary search, formal search and donor workup or cord blood unit request.
• Procuring the unrelated hematopoietic cells includes the collection and delivery of marrow, peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) or cord blood.

Transplant  

• During the transplant includes administering the preparative regimen, infusing the hematopoietic cells and monitoring engraftment.

Post-transplant  

• After the transplant includes preventing infection, minimizing side effects from the transplant, and returning the patient to his or her lifestyle.
